India lights me up.
But sometimes no light is the best light. I’m referring to external supplementation. It was the last night of the Diwali Festival of Lights in Jaipur. But apparently the switch for most of the city’s decorative lights recently installed for the occasion wasn’t flipped to light up my night. Perhaps the city was conserving energy. Off in the distance I heard a marching band and the sound was getting louder. I knew from past experience this would be a spontaneous photo event. Should I break out my Speedlites or not? The waning deep blue of twilight was almost gone so the ambient exposure would be minimal.
I had only seconds. The band marched through the city gates and to my amazement, the marchers carried their own lights. Within seconds the chaos and revelry was upon me.
The decision was made. No flash fill. There was no time to rig remote flash units anyway and no photo assistant to help. I relied on the expertise of my trusty Canon 5D Mark II to make formal decisions as I chased the band down the street. These guys were all strung together with electrical cords that were plugged into the truck that followed them.
Makeshift Indian ingenuity had prevailed once again.
India, you keep thrilling me.
